It big and it’s damn pretty. That’s reason enough to head to the National Cathedral, but what about the religious stuff? I mean, come on, it’s huge! And it’s… well… kind of a tourist attraction. It’s also a true to form Episcopal Church. We’re talkin’ high church, but way more laid back than your standard issue Roman Catholic perish. There were, get this, women working as priests… or pastors… err… whatever. And if I’m not mistaken these are also the folks (in California at least) who are now accepting the ordination of gays! What better representation of our national religious heritage than a church full of homos!
Apart from being pretty, the massage at Nat Cat is also totally on point. They’ve got smart people, providing insightful oratory, in an awe inspiring setting. The only draw back is that it’s kind of old school. Ultra ritualized. A pretty inflexible program which consistently includes communion and the Nicene Creed. The music is basically all choir, organ and very old hymns. Don’t get me wrong, it’s lovely, but it’s also a little boring.
Nevertheless the highs outweigh the lows. I give this church a 4 bell rating out of five. Well done!
